What Researchers Did
Doctors in Poland described the case of one patient who developed severe sepsis after a Vibrio vulnificus infection.
What They Found
This case report describes a 68-year-old man who developed life-threatening sepsis with multiple organ failure after being pricked by an unknown object in his leg at the seaside. He was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, then targeted antibiotics once Vibrio vulnificus was identified, along with surgery to decompress and open the infected tissue (fasciotomy). Hyperbaric chamber therapy was also given as part of his treatment. His general condition improved and his vital signs stabilized.
Canadian Relevance

Study Limitations
This is a single case report, so it cannot show which part of the combined treatment (antibiotics, surgery, or hyperbaric therapy) led to the patient's improvement, and the findings cannot be generalized to other patients.
