What Researchers Did
Researchers surveyed 91 maxillofacial oncologists in the UK to understand their referral patterns for hyperbaric oxygen therapy in patients with head and neck cancers.
What They Found
Eighty-five (93%) of consultants saw patients with osteoradionecrosis, with only five never referring for hyperbaric oxygen (HBO). Fifty-seven percent saw patients for osseointegrated implants after radiotherapy, and 30 (33%) never referred patients needing mandibular molar extractions after radiotherapy for HBO. Most consultants were also unaware of the method of HBO delivery.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients might experience varied approaches to hyperbaric oxygen therapy referrals for conditions like osteoradionecrosis or post-radiotherapy dental procedures. This highlights the potential for inconsistent treatment protocols and knowledge gaps among specialists, which could impact patient care.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in the UK and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study's reliance on a postal questionnaire means it reflects self-reported practices, which may not fully represent actual clinical behavior.
