What Researchers Did
Researchers analyzed three cases of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) in children following COVID-19 infection to investigate its incidence, characteristics, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.
What They Found
All three children presented with unilateral severe SSNHL across all frequencies, with no pathology found on imaging. Treatment included oral or intravenous methylprednisolone, intratympanic dexamethasone injections, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which led to hearing improvement in lower and middle frequencies. The prognosis of COVID-19-related SSNHL in children was closely related to the onset of treatment.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian children experiencing sudden hearing loss after COVID-19 infection might benefit from prompt, combined treatment approaches. Early intervention with glucocorticoids, intratympanic dexamethasone injections, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy could potentially improve hearing outcomes.
Canadian Relevance
There is no direct Canadian connection mentioned in this study.
Study Limitations
This study is limited by its small sample size, analyzing only three cases, which restricts the generalizability of its findings.
