What Researchers Did
Researchers evaluated the effectiveness of antibiotic therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and surgery in a 63-year-old female with mandibular osteomyelitis using quantitative bone SPECT/CT scans.
What They Found
After hyperbaric oxygen therapy and antibiotic administration, the patient's bone uptake values decreased significantly, with various parameters showing reductions between 18.5% and 36.5% from pretreatment levels. Following a surgical procedure (sequestomy), these values further decreased, showing overall reductions between 28.9% and 59.3% from the initial state. The patient's main symptoms were also relieved, and post-treatment scans showed decreased uptake.
