What Researchers Did
Researchers reported on a case of pulmonary barotrauma complicated by cerebral arterial air embolism in a diver.
What They Found
They found that a patient admitted in November 2019 with this condition, caused by improper underwater escape, was successfully treated. The patient received a 0.12 MPa oxygen inhalation recompression scheme in an air-pressurized oxygen chamber and recovered and was discharged after 7 days.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This case highlights that prompt and appropriate recompression therapy can lead to positive outcomes for divers experiencing severe barotrauma. Canadian patients who experience similar diving-related injuries may benefit from specialized hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
Canadian Relevance
This study does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a single case report, this study's findings are limited in generalizability and require further research.
