What Researchers Did
Researchers treated a 62-year-old man who developed akinetic mutism with delayed white matter demyelination after hypoxia using hyperbaric oxygen (HBO).
What They Found
HBO treatment in the subacute period markedly improved the patient's activity in daily life, cognitive function, and organization on EEG. 1H-MRS showed a recovery of aerobic metabolism of the neurons, although dementia and cerebral atrophy slowly progressed despite HBO treatment.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This case suggests that hyperbaric oxygen might offer some functional benefits for Canadian patients experiencing delayed posthypoxic demyelination. However, it may not prevent the long-term progression of neurodegeneration.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A significant limitation of this study is its design as a single case report, which limits the generalizability of the findings.
