What Researchers Did
Researchers reported a case of cerebral air gas embolism (CAGE) from concentrated hydrogen peroxide ingestion and reviewed similar cases from medical literature.
What They Found
They found that a 48-year-old male who accidentally ingested 33% hydrogen peroxide developed CAGE, which resolved after hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). A literature search revealed two other CAGE cases from hydrogen peroxide ingestion treated with HBOT that also had complete symptom resolution, compared to only one of seven cases without HBOT.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing cerebral air gas embolism due to concentrated hydrogen peroxide ingestion may benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Prompt medical evaluation and treatment are important for potentially reversing severe neurological symptoms.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study is limited by being a single case report supplemented by a small literature review, which prevents broad generalizations.
