What Researchers Did
Researchers reviewed medical records and neuroimaging of 36 consecutive patients with iatrogenic cerebral arterial gas embolism (CAGE) treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) over 22 years to identify factors associated with a favorable outcome.
What They Found
A total of 26 (72%) of the 36 patients experienced a favorable outcome. Patients with favorable outcomes were younger (mean age 44.7 vs 58.1 years), and receiving HBO2 within 6 hours of the event was an independent predictor of a positive response. Conversely, the presence of infarct or edema on pre-treatment imaging negatively predicted a favorable outcome.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing CAGE may benefit from prompt hyperbaric oxygen therapy, ideally within six hours of the event. Early intervention is crucial, especially before the development of brain infarcts or edema, which can worsen prognosis.
Canadian Relevance
This study does not have a direct Canadian connection as it was conducted at a state referral hyperbaric facility outside of Canada.
Study Limitations
Limitations include the retrospective design, relatively small sample size of 36 patients, and its single-center nature over a long period.
