What Researchers Did
This study retrospectively reviewed the safety and outcomes of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in 17 traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients at a single center.
What They Found
Of 17 TBI patients, 12 (70.6%) completed 120 HBOT sessions and showed statistically significant improvements (P < 0.05) in cognitive and subjective symptom scores three months post-treatment. These patients also exhibited increased cerebral blood flow and oxygen metabolism on SPECT scans. Five patients withdrew, with one due to new-onset headaches.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
If further research confirms these findings, hyperbaric oxygen therapy could potentially offer a new treatment option for Canadian patients experiencing long-term symptoms after a traumatic brain injury. This could lead to improved cognitive function and quality of life for those affected.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted at a single medical center outside of Canada, therefore it has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
Limitations include the small sample size of 17 patients, its single-center retrospective design, and the lack of a control group.
