What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively analyzed the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on chronic post-concussion symptoms in 26 adults who experienced traumatic brain injury in childhood.
What They Found
The 26 adult participants, with a mean age of 31.7 years, had sustained TBI at an average age of 7.7 years. After receiving at least 40 sessions of HBOT, statistically significant improvements (all adjusted p < 0.001) were observed in global cognition, memory, executive function, attention, and information processing speed.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian adults experiencing persistent post-concussion symptoms from childhood traumatic brain injury, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may offer a potential treatment to improve cognitive function. This could lead to better quality of life and daily functioning for those living with chronic neurocognitive impairments.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted at a center outside of Canada.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective cohort study, this research is limited by its non-randomized design and potential for selection bias.
