What Researchers Did
Researchers described the first reported case of multifocal strokes and vision loss in a middle-aged female immediately following poly-D, L-lactic acid (PDLLA) dermal filler injections.
What They Found
The patient experienced acute bilateral vision loss, with fundal examination revealing retinal edema and filler material in retinal arteries. Magnetic resonance imaging showed multifocal strokes in the left caudate head and right medial frontal lobe, along with ischemia of the left optic nerve. After hyperbaric oxygen therapy, her right eye vision improved, but poor vision persisted in her left eye.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients considering PDLLA dermal fillers should be aware of the potential for rare but serious vascular complications, including stroke and permanent vision loss. It is crucial to discuss all risks with a qualified practitioner before undergoing cosmetic procedures involving dermal fillers.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a single case report, the findings may not be generalizable to all individuals receiving PDLLA dermal filler injections.
