What Researchers Did
Researchers developed and validated a gravity score to assess the severity of neurologic decompression illness in divers.
What They Found
The developed gravity score, based on parameters like motor impairment and urinary disturbances, showed 78.7% agreement with clinical observations in the initial group of 96 divers. Validation in a second group of 66 divers revealed a significant difference in scores between those with and without sequelae (P = 0.0001). Notably, 86% of divers with a score above 7 developed sequelae.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This gravity score could help medical professionals better assess the severity of neurologic decompression illness in divers. A standardized score might also facilitate comparisons between different treatment protocols, potentially leading to more effective care.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The authors note that this gravity score still requires validation in a prospective multicenter study.
