What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a prospective trial to evaluate the combined effect of cervical spinal cord stimulation (cSCS) and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy in 12 comatose patients, comparing them to a control group of 12 patients receiving median nerve stimulation only.
What They Found
Six of the 12 patients (50%) who received combined cSCS and HBO therapy emerged from coma at 1 year, showing significant increases in Glasgow Coma Scale score, SPECT imaging, and PVS scores (P < .05) compared to enrollment. In contrast, the control group showed no apparent improvement.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This preliminary study suggests that a combination of cervical spinal cord stimulation and hyperbaric oxygen therapy could potentially improve outcomes for some comatose patients. However, further robust research is required before these findings could be considered for widespread clinical application in Canada.
Canadian Relevance
There is no direct Canadian connection mentioned in this study.
Study Limitations
This was a preliminary report with a small sample size and lacked randomization, limiting the generalizability of its findings.
