What Researchers Did
Researchers reviewed current and proposed treatments for ischaemic optic neuropathy, including both arteritic and nonarteritic forms.
What They Found
They found that there is no proven effective treatment for ischaemic optic neuropathy. While systemic corticosteroids are used for arteritic forms to prevent further damage, numerous therapies for the more common nonarteritic form (NAION) have been unsuccessful. Neuroprotective strategies and optic nerve regeneration studies are currently under investigation.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The primary limitation highlighted is the current absence of systematically proven effective treatments for ischaemic optic neuropathy.
